THE DEPLORABLE STATE OF THE LLT

On the 12th of October, 2017 Prof. Abel Idowu Olayinka commissioned the then beautifully renovated Large Lecture Theatre (LLT) and Small Lecture Theatre (SLT) of Faculty of the Social Sciences. Two years down the lane the state of these facilities are nothing to write home about.

Gaining admission into the premier University of Ibadan, one of the most motivating factors that facilitated my quest for learning was the amazing lecture theatre. I must say that I almost fell to my feet on my first entrance into the theatre – owing to the full blown air condition and cleanliness. Then, learning aids that were provided for students in the theatre were functioning well. Today, however, the theatre is as shambolic as the shambles.

It makes one to then beg the question; was these facilities ever of good quality? Considering the fast pace of its damages. If yes, which construction firm was the project contracted to? If no, can we then say the fault is all on the poor usage by students? These are cogent questions begging for answers.

And of course this is bringing to the limelight the inadequate and inefficient maintenance culture that has been prevalent in the country.

However, this is not intended to trade blames at either party. On the contrary, it is serving as a wakeup call to both students and the appropriate management.

To the students, we should all imbibe the habit of taking good care of all of these facilities and use them for the right purpose.

Finally, we are appealing to the appropriate authority to help resuscitate these facilities and make learning sufficiently valuable again for students and lecturers alike.
